Picture this, being labelled mentally disabled by the government, simply because you were born to a struggling single mom, or a parent who is involved in crime, alcohol or drugs. This is the bleak reality for many kids in former Russian countries.
Irina* is one of these kids. She lacked any parental nurturing which left her way behind the curve developmentally. This impacted every aspect of her life, as she faced barriers within society, education and even relationships. There was no way for her to get beyond this dilemma, that is, until she got the best invitation of her life!
When she was 11 years old, a friend told her how cool the Grain of Wheat Alpine club was and she couldn’t wait to check it out. From the very first moment, it was obvious that she had a gift for this sport. Her hard work learning to ski and excel at rock climbing paid off, as her “mentally disabled” diagnosis has now been removed. Not only that, but today, at age 17, she is her country’s national champion in rock climbing! Irina* has even been invited to be a ski coach for those with intellectual disabilities at the next Special Olympics!
For more than 15 years, the Grain of Wheat team has been sharing God’s love with developmentally challenged kids through rock climbing, mountaineering and downhill skiing.
We invite you to join our team as we aim to reach 300 kids like Irina* with the love of Jesus. Giving them the chance to move beyond “DISabled” to “ENabled”.
